The Pantocrator Seminary of Cosmic Theology

Theology of the cosmos and the non-human question: the Cosmic Christ, consciousness and creation, and other minds, studied in the faith of the Order.

Mission

The Seminary offers accessible, serious theological study of the cosmos: the Cosmic Christ, consciousness and creation, angelology and historical cosmology, astrotheology, the ethics of possible contact, and the theology of artificial and other minds. All courses are theological instruction in the faith of the Order. Its questions are open; it does not assert that any non-human intelligence beyond Earth has been discovered.

Certificate tracks are open to students of every tradition, or none. The Doctor of Divinity program is open only to clergy and members of the Order.

Theological inquiry into other minds: angels, possible extraterrestrial life and artificial intelligence, studied in the faith of the Order.

  • Historical Cosmology and the Plurality of Worlds. The history of theological debate on other worlds, from Democritus and medieval debates to Kepler, Fontenelle and the modern era.
  • Angelology Then and Now. Pseudo-Dionysius, Aquinas and modern readings of the angelic hierarchies as a theology of non-human persons.
  • Astrotheology. Theological study of how Christian doctrines of creation, incarnation and redemption might respond if life is found beyond Earth.
  • The Ethics of Contact. Christian moral theology applied to responsibility, humility and hospitality in imagined encounters with other intelligences; lessons from history.
  • Theology of AI and Other Minds. A theological study of personhood, the image of God and moral status in an age of artificial intelligence.
  • Seminar: Open Questions in Theology. A theological research seminar; participants present a short paper. No conclusions are assumed in advance.

Legal Status

The Pantocrator Seminary of Cosmic Theology is a religious ministry owned, controlled, operated, and maintained by the Order of the Christ Pantocrator, a nonprofit religious corporation. It awards only religious degrees, for the sole purpose of conferring clerical status or authority within the Order (SDCL 13-49-27.1; 13-48-41). Enrollment in its degree program is limited to clergy and members of the Order. The Seminary is not accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and its degrees are not approved or endorsed by the State of South Dakota or any other state. They are intended solely for ecclesiastical use within the Order and are not intended for employment, licensure, or academic transfer. Other states may restrict the use of unaccredited degrees.

Residents of Oregon, New Jersey, North Dakota and Texas, and of any other state that restricts unaccredited degrees, should review their own state’s law before enrolling in the degree program; the Seminary will provide a specific written warning and may decline enrollment where use would be unlawful.

A South Dakota attorney’s opinion letter on the Seminary’s exempt status is being obtained and will be kept on file. Nothing in this document is legal advice, and no programs will be advertised or awards conferred until that opinion is received.
